A sequel of sorts to Wolfenstein 3D that was released by Formgen as a retail only game (not shareware like Wolf3D) this demo version unfortunately contains only two playable levels. However the Spear of Destiny game is still great fun, although it uses the exact same engine, graphics, sounds etc as Wolfenstein 3D and features only new levels. I wasn't allowed to play Wolf 3D as a kid; I distinctly remember being scolded for doing so. When I found the illicit diskette years later in high school, however, I burned through that sucker.

Wolfenstein 3D is a first-person shooter developed by Id Software and published by Apogee Software in 1992 for DOS. It has since been ported for several systems including PC-98, Mac, Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

The game was inspired by the 1980s Muse Software video game Castle Wolfenstein, a top-down infiltration game.

Wolfenstein 3D came out hot on the heels of the Commander Keen series and utilized the game engine created by John Cormack. It was pre-Doom, but you can see that many of the gameplay elements made their way into this future release. Playing as a captured allied spy, you must escape your Nazi captors and foil their plans for world domination. The game is broken down into six episodes which further break down into ten levels each. Eight regular levels, a boss level, and a secret level. Each level has a labyrinthian set up with lots of areas to explore, secrets to find, and enemies to blow away. You have a set number of lives, but it is possible to earn extra lives as you play.

Wolfenstein 3D is one of Apogee’s best selling games and is looked at by many as the godfather of 3D and first-person shooters, first of all, Doom. It raked in cash for both Apogee and Id in its heyday. 26 years later it still holds up as a classic of the genre and a hell of a good game.

Play Wolfenstein 3D with Wolf3DTC

Wolf3DTC is a total conversion from all episodes of Wolfenstein 3D and Spear of Destiny to the Doom engine. You can play it with the GZDoom port. Although it has some graphical enhancements, it looks and feels like the real thing! Here's how to install and play it!

Download and install GZDoom and Wolf3DTC

• Download ZDoom (click on the Windows icon), please note the latest version of GZDoom (4.6.x) does not work with Wolf3DTC!
• Extract the contents of the downloaded zip file, for example d:gameszdoom
• Download Wolf3DTC (version 2.0.x)
• Extract the contents of the downloaded zip file into the ZDoom folder, you'll end up with d:gameszdoomWolfenstein 3D TC
• That's it. Yes. You can play all Wolfenstein games now, by following the steps below.

Start and configure Wolf3DTC

3d Browser Games

• Navigate to the Wolf3DTC folder, in this example d:gameszdoomWolfenstein 3D TC
• Double click the Consolidated TC.bat file to start the game
• Click on Controls in the main menu
• Please note there are a lot of options here that don't work, because they're for Doom games
• Click on Set video mode
• If you don't want to play in fullscreen, set Fullscreen to No
• Set Force aspect ratio to Off
• Choose the resolution of your screen, for example 1920x1080
• Press Esc twice to return to the main menu
• Click on New game in the main menu and pick an episode to play
